Kittiwakes Housing

Last winter, we travelled to the Arctic coast of Norway—right when seabirds return to claim their nesting spots for the coming breeding season. Arriving early is everything up here; if they don’t secure a spot in time, the competition will.

Kittiwakes, however, aren’t too demanding. All they need is a simple shelf or ledge, preferably sheltered from the wind if it's not too much to ask. Cliffs are perfect, but harbour buildings work just as well. In Norway’s fishing villages, the mix of old, colourful houses creates a beautiful patchwork backdrop—turning these towns into lively collages of nesting Kittiwakes.
